Visitors can explore part of Lisbon’s historic underground water network on Sunday, October 25, with guided tours costing €6 per person. Lisbon’s Water Museum (Museu da Água) is organising the visits to the Galeria do Loreto.

The stone passage forms part of the Águas Livres water supply system, which once carried water beneath the capital. Visitors will walk through narrow tunnels with traces of the infrastructure that supplied Lisbon for generations.

Tour Times and Route

Two tours are scheduled, at 2.30pm and 4.30pm. The guided walk starts at Casa do Registo, at Rua das Amoreiras, 12, and ends at the Reservatório da Patriarcal in Praça do Príncipe Real.

The gallery runs beneath several central Lisbon streets: Rua do Loreto, Rua da Misericórdia, Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara, Rua Dom Pedro V and Rua da Escola Politécnica.

It belongs to the wider Águas Livres system, an extensive historic water network that remains largely out of sight beneath the modern city.

Tickets and Claustrophobia Warning

Tickets can be purchased online. According to Portugal Resident, places on visits to Lisbon’s underground water galleries are typically limited and can sell out quickly.

Organisers warn that the experience is not recommended for people who suffer from claustrophobia.
