Portugal’s government plans to strengthen road traffic enforcement with more speed cameras and digital offence reports, according to Pplware. The digital system is intended to help authorities handle offences more quickly and reduce administrative delays.
The plans also include bringing back the GNR’s traffic brigade and preparing a new Highway Code.
Digital Reports to Speed Up Cases
Digital offence reports would replace slower administrative procedures. The aim is to simplify how authorities process traffic offences and reduce bureaucracy that can delay penalties.
According to the report, this could shorten the time needed to handle an offence, from its initial recording by authorities through the administrative case. The source describes faster processing as an intended result of the changes.
Traffic Brigade and Road Safety Target
The planned return of the GNR’s traffic brigade is intended to increase the authorities’ presence on roads and strengthen enforcement. Plans for the brigade had already been announced, with around 1300 personnel expected at its launch.
These measures form part of the new National Road Safety Strategy, Visão Zero 2030. Its target is to halve the number of deaths and serious injuries on Portuguese roads by 2030.
The government is also preparing a new Highway Code. The planned changes are intended to improve the response to traffic offences and strengthen road safety.
