ANSR, GNR and PSP are launching a road safety campaign from 13 to 19 October, combining advice for drivers with speed-related enforcement. Five joint activities are planned across mainland Portugal.
The Travel Without Rushing campaign focuses on excessive speed and speeds that are unsafe for road conditions. It is the tenth of eleven campaigns in the 2026 National Enforcement Plan.
Awareness and Speed Checks
The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) will lead awareness activities, while GNR and PSP will carry out enforcement operations. These will target risky behaviour linked to speed.
ANSR teams will speak to drivers about safer driving while police carry out checks. The campaign also includes communication through digital channels.
According to ANSR, crashes linked to speeds that were excessive for the conditions caused 154 deaths and 563 serious injuries between 2023 and 2025.
Staying Within the Limit May Not Be Enough
The campaign warns that higher speeds increase the distance needed to stop a vehicle and can make the consequences of a crash more serious.
Drivers may need to slow down even when they are within the posted speed limit. The source highlights rain, poor visibility, heavier traffic and people crossing the road as situations that require extra care.
The campaign asks drivers to:
- Allow enough time for the journey rather than speeding to make up for a delay.
- Always respect speed limits.
- Adjust speed to traffic, road conditions and the weather.
- Slow down near schools, pedestrian crossings and places with pedestrians or cyclists.
- Keep a safe distance that allows time to react and stop safely.
Part of the National Road Safety Plan
The joint campaign aims to protect drivers, passengers, pedestrians and cyclists. ANSR, GNR and PSP stress that driving at a suitable speed saves lives and makes roads safer for all users.
ANSR develops the National Enforcement Plan each year in coordination with GNR and PSP. It draws on European recommendations and the Vision Zero 2030 framework, which aims to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Portuguese roads by 2030.
